Indian Representatives Meet

It is the 20th of May, 1946. India had suffered enough. She was working the longest hours. She was putting in the most effort. She was paying the most taxes. She was seeing no change. She was receiving no benefits. She despised her boss – somebody so insecure that she has added ‘Great’ into her very name. It had long crossed the point of no return. It is time India resigned.

At this juncture, under the initiative of new Labour Prime Minister Clement Atlee, the Cabinet Mission was sent to India to negotiate the terms of the transfer of power from the Crown to the Indian leaders. It consisted of three British representatives – Sir Stafford Cripps, Lord Pethick-Lawrence and A.V. Alexander. They arrived in India on 23rd March, and on the 16th of May announced their Plan for the future of India.

Although the Mission aimed at preserving the unity of the Indian subcontinent, forces were already in play. The All-India Muslim League had passed a resolution in their 1940 Lahore Session, demanding the partition of India along religious grounds.

In this committee, we travel back to the last days of the British Raj in India. Political leaders from across the country have been brought together to discuss, deliberate and negotiate. Each has a vision of what their future will be like. Each has a motive they want to push. As the situation across the subcontinent deteriorates, it is imperative that a compromise is reached.

The cracks are visible in the dream for a unified India. You can choose to start repairing or watch it shatter.
